Mike was born on July 13, 1937, in Zagreb, Latvia, which is now part of Croatia. After money was paid for their release, they were sent to the Italian-controlled region of Dalmatia, specifically to the town of Split, which is now part of Croatia.
In 1940-41, Mike, his mother, younger brother, aunt, and uncle traveled by train into Northern Italy, arriving in the town of Corgne. From there, they eventually made their way to Rome, where they lived under fake names and passports to avoid detection.

Mike's mother later remarried a family friend, and Mike, along with his brother, was enrolled in a Catholic convent under their new identities. Despite being Jewish, they were treated very well, and the church father showed great respect for their background.
After the war, Mike briefly spent time in Ecuador as a stopover on their way to the United States, where they eventually settled.
