Michael was born in 1936 in Warsaw, Poland, into one of the richest families in the country. In 1939, when World War II broke out, Michael's father was away in France for business and became stranded there. Michael was left in the care of his mother and their Polish nanny, Gertruda Bablinska, who would later be recognized as a Righteous Gentile for her bravery and kindness.

While in Lithuania, Gertruda risked her life to take food to Jews confined in the Ghetto. When Michael was 8 years old, Gertruda had him baptized, but she always reminded him to remember that he was a Jew. After the war, they were sent to an American-controlled camp in Germany.
Michael and Gertruda boarded the Exodus ship, but like many Jewish refugees at the time, they were sent back to Germany.

Eventually, they managed to board another boat, posing as American tourists, and made their way to Israel.
In Israel, Michael and Gertruda lived in Jaffa. Michael later joined the Israeli army and fought in the Six-Day War. Gertruda remained by Michael’s side throughout their time in Israel and eventually passed away there, having fulfilled her promise to his mother.
